Florida Marlins Game Notes-- Game 31, by Paolo

Game: San Diego Padres @ Florida Marlins

Venue: Dolphin Stadium

Start Time: 1:10 P.M. Eastern Time

Attendance: 11,422

Length of Game: 2:59

Starting Pitchers: Greg Maddux ( Padres) vs Andrew Miller ( Marlins)

Greg Maddux ducked to avoid a line drive single by Luis Gonzalez, and later in the inning he hollered a playful complaint at his longtime nemesis.

Not enough went as planned Sunday for Maddux, who failed in his fourth bid to reach 350 victories. He was outpitched by young Andrew Miller, and the San Diego Padres lost to the Florida Marlins, 10-3.

Maddux (2-3) twice failed to hold a lead, and he allowed 11 hits and five runs, four earned, in 5 2/3 innings.

When Maddux's workday ended, he walked off the mound and headed directly for the tunnel to the clubhouse, bypassing the dugout. There were no backslaps from teammates, and no milestones, either.

The four-time Cy Young award winner is 0-3 in four starts since April 13. He leads all active pitchers in victories and was trying to become the ninth member of the 350-win club, but instead he fell to 349-217 and lost his fourth decision against Florida in a row.

Miller (2-2) earned his seventh career win with his best performance since joining the Marlins in the offseason trade that sent Dontrelle Willis and Miguel Cabrera to Detroit. The left-hander allowed four hits and two runs in a season-high six innings, and he put Florida ahead to stay with a groundout for his first major league RBI.

Miller threw fewer pitches than the usually efficient Maddux -- 88 to 94 -- and reduced his ERA from 9.12 to 7.96.

Dan Uggla hit his seventh homer, doubled twice, drove in three runs and scored three times for the Marlins, who took two of three games in the series. Mike Jacobs also had three of Florida's 16 hits and drove in a run, and Matt Treanor had two hits and two RBI.

Gonzalez went 1-for-2 against Maddux with an inte

Uggla hit a leadoff homer off Maddux to start the second and make the score 1-all. Florida rallied again to take the lead for good in the fourth.

Jacobs led off with a single and took third on a double by Uggla. After Gonzalez was intentionally walked to load the bases with one out, Treanor singled sharply off the glove of third baseman Kevin Kouzmanoff to score a run.

Uggla scored when Miller bounced out to second.

Maddux failed to survive the sixth inning, when the Marlins scored twice. After Gonzalez and Treanor singled, Cody Ross hit a two-out RBI single, and another run came home when right fielder Brian Giles mishandled the ball for an error.

That sent Maddux to the tunnel with the score 5-2.

Black was headed for the clubhouse shortly after Maddux, thanks to an ejection in the seventh inning by plate umpire Sam Holbrook for arguing about balls and strikes.

San Diego scored in the second when Scott Hairston led off with a double, advanced on a groundout and scored on Josh Bard's groundout.

The only other run allowed by Miller came on Adrian Gonzalez's homer on an 0-2 pitch with two out in the third. It was the eighth homer for Gonzalez and the second in two games.

Up Next: The Marlins are off monday before starting a three-game series versus the Brewers on Tuesday night at Dolphin Stadium.
